Mentor - Introduction

A photo of a mentor talking with a student in a library. Welcome!

Thank you for visiting the SIRI mentor webpage. We hope the SIRI experience will be satisfying for you and the students you may be mentoring.

Program Goals

The Student Independent Research Intern (SIRI) Program is organized to:
  • Give students real-life work or research experiences as a component of their academic program, ones that can help them make career choices and, if they decide to go into some kind of technical work, help them chart future steps in their education.

  • Give JPL scientists and engineers the opportunity to interact with students, and contribute to their intellectual growth by serving as mentors.

SIRI Students
  • SIRI students are pre-selected by Faculty Sponsors at their colleges to be enthusiastic and hard-working students. Many have life experience beyond their peers, and they provide mentors with a stimulating and satisfying experience.

  • Students will be applying for a one-semester internship, for which they are given Independent Study credit at their college upon successful completion of the program requirements. There is an option for some students to continue as Research Apprentices after they complete their one-semester term as SIRI students; mentors who choose this option must be able to support them through the relatively low-cost JPL Research Apprentice (RA) program managed through the Education Office.

Adminstrative Support

The JPL Education Office will serve as liaison between colleges and mentors, and will be responsible for the administrative processing, badging, orientation, and making local colleges aware of the program opportunities and its requirements.
